A Service of NYSSCPA.org
Vol. 9, No. 27

Dear Subscriber

This week in the E-zine: Gov. David A. Paterson’s appointment of a lieutenant governor results in a legal challenge as the state Senate saga continues; members weigh in on the Obama administration’s plan for regulatory reform; a joint CPE and continuing legal education course brings lawyers and accountants together; and we preview two upcoming FAE events.

The NYSSCPA E-zine staff will continue to cover and report on these topics that are important to New York area CPAs. Further, staff members of the Society and FAE also stand ready to help with questions on CPE and FAE courses, conferences and seminars.

Thank you for your continued interest.

Sincerely,

NYSSCPA.org Web Site Staff

International Accounting Standards: Going from the Talk to Doing the Walk

The third annual Forum on Contemporary Accounting Issues was held on April 30, 2009, at the Lubin School of Business at Pace University. The topic of international accounting was explored through interviews with FASB Chairman Robert H. Herz, IASB Vice Chairman Tom Jones, PricewaterhouseCoopers Global CEO Samuel A. DiPiazza, Jr., and Grant Thornton CEO Edward E. Nusbaum. Two panel discussions brought together accounting professionals from a variety of backgrounds. The proceedings were adapted for this month’s issue.

Showdown Looms Over Legality of Lt. Governor

NEW YORK -- New York’s least favorite reality show continued on into its 31st day today as Republican senators, along with apostate Democrat Pedro Espada Jr., successfully secured a temporary restraining order from a Nassau County judge intended to prevent former MTA chief Richard Ravitch from assuming the duties of lieutenant governor, a move that would have the broken the stalemate that has left the state government paralyzed for several weeks.

Accounting Changes Among Proposals for Regulatory Reform

NEW YORK -- As a response to the near-collapse of the financial system last year, President Barack Obama announced a proposal in mid-June that pushes Congress to give the executive branch of government and the quasi-private Federal Reserve vast new powers to supervise previously unregulated aspects of the economy and reorganize its existing oversight.

CPAs and Lawyers: Kindred Spirits?

NEW YORK -- The legal profession and the profession of accountancy frequently intertwine. As local attorney Richard M. Morris put it recently, “We all solve problems for our clients. We both have the same goal in mind.”

Conference Will Address Changing Health Care Industry

NEW YORK -- The healthcare industry is set to undergo a major facelift as Congress and President Barack Obama attempt to steer the course towards a more universal system for all Americans.

Breakfast Conference to Focus on Bankruptcy Issues

NEW YORK -- The recessionary economy has forced many businesses into bankruptcy, while others struggle to avoid or recover from it. It’s essential that CPAs keep up-to-date on the rules and regulations that govern the reorganization of an entity.
