Vol. 8, No. 14

Dear Subscriber

This week in the E-zine: U.S. Fed Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke concedes recession is ‘possible’; an accountancy reform bill is introduced in the New York State Senate for the ninth consecutive year; the U.S. Treasury’s Advisory Committee preliminary report suggests bailout possibilities for large firms; and we preview the upcoming CPA Tech Expo and Broker/Dealer Conference.

The NYSSCPA E-zine staff will continue to cover and report on these topics that are important to New York area CPAs. Further, staff members of the Society and FAE also stand ready to help with questions on CPE and FAE courses, conferences and seminars.

Thank you for your continued interest.

Sincerely,

Unrest in Government Accounting
By Craig Foltin

Since 1984, the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) has provided standards and guidance for accounting and financial reporting to state and local government entities. GASB was given the task of creating a comprehensive set of standards and developing a new reporting model for the government accounting profession. Some, including the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA; www.gfoa.org), have proposed that GASB’s mission may be complete and its ongoing operation should be reevaluated.
