The New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants Urges the New York Congressional Delegation to Postpone Tax Deadline
NEW YORK – (March 16, 2020) – The New York State Society of CPAs (NYSSCPA) has called on the New York Congressional Delegation to urge the Department of the Treasury and the IRS to extend and/or postpone the April 15 tax filing deadline amid the current coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The letter of support comes after the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) proposed numerous changes to the IRS and Treasury Department, which has caused Secretary Steven Mnuchin to announce a 90-day extension.
In a letter, NYSSCPA CEO and Executive Director Joanne S. Barry addressed U.S. Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, U.S. Senator Kristen Gillibrand, and all New York members of the U.S. House of Representatives, asking for their leadership in ensuring relief for all taxpayers in light of the uncertainty and challenges caused by the spread of the virus.
Barry states that, “While I appreciate the [Trump] Administration’s public support to the taxpaying public, I am greatly concerned that the Treasury Department and the IRS have yet to provide specific details on how relief will be administered and whom it might cover. Immediate, clear guidance and specific details on tax filing and payment relief are critically needed to help tax practitioners and their clients.
“Relief for all taxpayers is desperately needed in light of the uncertainty and challenges caused by the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and tax practitioners and our clients anxiously wait for details from the Administration in the midst of this fast-moving emergency situation.”
The NYSSCPA has been in close communications with the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, and has called for them to extend their April 15 tax deadlines, as well.
