NEW YORK (April 13, 2013) – The New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA) will present Beth van Bladel with its Outstanding CPA in Industry Award on May 16 at the Society’s 116th Annual Election Meeting and Dinner at the New York Marriott Marquis at Times Square.
This award recognizes CPA financial executives with records of outstanding professional achievement in a private business or industry; van Bladel is the corporate controller for EYP Architecture & Engineering, in Albany.
A member of the NYSSCPA since 1992, van Bladel founded the Northeast Chapter’s Young CPA and CFO Committees and served on the Northeast Chapter Board of Directors, including the role of Northeast Chapter President. At the statewide level she served on the Board of Directors and various industry-related committees.
“I think the NYSSCPA is a critical resource for CPA’s in industry. Many of our members are the sole CPA in their organization,” she said. “The NYSSCPA provides a support system for CPAs in industry to stay current on technical matters and come together on a routine basis to discuss current issues and seek input towards developing solutions.”
During the past three years, van Bladel has developed the Northeast Chapter’s CFO Committee to be a forum for Capital Region chief financial officers and controllers to network and share challenges of being the sole CPA in an industry business setting. Some of the issues the committee has addressed include healthcare reform, sales tax audits, staffing trends, electronic data storage, technical research, private-equity due diligence, DOL compliance and social networking. The group has served as a model for other NYSSCPA chapters around the state.
During the past 20 years, her prior financial management experience includes serving as a chief financial officer for a start-up bio-fuels company, as controller for a publicly-held independent power producer and as an auditor for a Big-Four accounting firm.
“If you were to ask any board member of the Northeast Chapter what was the spark that got them to actively participate at the Chapter level, the answer nine out of 10 times would be Beth van Bladel,” wrote Suzanne Jensen, chief financial officer of the Business Council of New York State; and F. Michael Zovistoski, partner in accounting firm UHY LLP; in van Bladel’s award nomination letter.
A graduate of the State University of New York at Albany, van Bladel is a graduate of the Albany-Colonie Regional Chamber of Commerce Capital Leadership Program and has been recognized as a Capital District Business Review 40 Under Forty honoree.
