Long Island CPA Harold L. Deiters III Takes Helm of NY’s Largest CPA Group

Deiters, Harold (2)MELVILLE – (June 14, 2017) – Suffolk CPA, Harold L. Deiters III, a partner at Melville, Long Island, accounting and advisory firm, Baker Tilly, began his one-year term as President of the New York State Society of CPAs (NYSSCPA) June 1.

Deiters takes the helm of the NYSSCPA as the organization pushes for legislation that would require peer reviews for all New York-based CPA firms, something only medium and large size firms have been required to do by law since 2011.

“This is a public protection issue,” said Deiters. “New York, a state known for the strength of its consumer protection laws, is the only state that permits this lack of oversight for smaller firms. Smaller firms have fewer resources at their disposal, so it just makes sense that these firms undergo a peer review of their quality controls, just like larger firms do.”

The NYSSCPA is also launching a new 501(c)(3) organization, The Moynihan Scholarship Fund, to help advance its fundraising capabilities for its educational and career advancement programs for high school and college students as well as young CPAs. While the Fund has existed since 2015, under Deiters, the NYSSCPA will establish the Fund as a separate charity.

A Society member since 1998, Harold served on the NYSSCPA Board of Directors since 2012. He has also served with distinction as president-elect of the Foundation for Accounting Education Board of Trustees, Political Action Committee trustee, as Suffolk Chapter President, Suffolk Chapter Young CPAs Committee chair, chair of the chapter’s Cooperation with Attorneys Committee, and on multiple statewide and chapter committees.

Deiters is the partner-in-charge of the litigation and valuation consulting team in the New York regional offices of Baker Tilly Virchow Krause, LLP. He specializes in business appraisal and forensic accounting and is experienced in valuations for matrimonial settlements, estate tax purposes, gift planning, shareholder disputes, buy/sell agreements and complex forensic accounting projects.

Deiters is accredited in Business Valuation (ABV), Certification in Financial Forensics (CFF) from the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA), Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) credential from the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, Master Analyst in Financial Forensics (MAFF) credential from the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts, and is a Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) from the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

A Long Island native, Harold attended St. John’s University in Jamaica, Queens, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. He was previously recognized as a "40 Under 40" up-and-comer in business by the Long Island Business News, was co-founder and past president of Long Island’s Accountants-Attorney Networking Group, and served as a past adjunct professor for St. Joseph’s College teaching auditing principles. Deiters lives in Yaphank with his wife, Kelly, and two sons, Anthony and Alex.
