NEW YORK, NY, March 27, 2012 – The New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA) will present Joseph M. Falbo, Jr., CPA, of Grand Island, with its Special Recognition Award on May 10 at the Society’s 115th Annual Election Meeting and Dinner at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City. Falbo is a tax partner at Tronconi Segarra & Associates LLP in Buffalo.
Falbo is only the sixth person to win this NYSSCPA award in the Society’s history. The Special Recognition Award recognizes members who have made extraordinary contributions to the NYSSCPA warranting special attention, according to Margaret A. Wood, NYSSCPA immediate past president and chair of this year’s Awards Committee.
Falbo’s tenure as secretary/treasurer and Finance Committee chair came during a time when the NYSSCPA was reorganizing its internal budget process. Working with other NYSSCPA leaders, Falbo established a new internal financial reporting system that provided board members and staff leaders the information they need to make the best possible fiscal and operational choices for the Society.
“He did outstanding work last year and the year before as treasurer, and did outstanding work on the Board of Directors,” Wood said. “And I think he has more outstanding work to be done.”
“Our reports now better reflect the financial position of the organization, and that empowered the board,” said David J. Moynihan, who was Society president when Falbo was secretary/treasurer and Finance Committee chair.
“We have seen results in the last two years since that additional transparency was provided,” said current NYSSCPA Secretary/Treasurer Scott M. Adair.
Falbo joined the NYSSCPA in 1994, and is a past member of its Board of Directors and Executive Committee, serving as vice president and secretary/treasurer (for two terms). He also chaired the NYSSCPA Finance Committee and its Investment Subcommittee, the Information Technology Committee and the Governance Subcommittee. He was a member of its Nominating, Awards and Computers in Tax Practice committees.
“No matter how difficult the challenge, Joe always brought practical and insightful solutions to the Board,” said Society Board of Directors Member Sherry L. DelleBovi, who nominated Falbo for the award.
Falbo has also been a valuable asset to the Buffalo Chapter, where he has served as the chapter’s president, president-elect and vice president. He also was the chair of the chapter’s Technology Committee and was a member of its Membership and Young CPAs committees.
“Whatever the involvement or role he undertakes, Mr. Falbo brings much energy, ideas and oversight,” said Buffalo Chapter President Franca Trincia. “Mr. Falbo has always demonstrated initiative toward the improvement of our profession, our chapter’s programs and activities as well as a commitment to our community as a whole.”
Falbo graduated from Niagara University with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration and is a past chair of the University’s Niagara County Alumni Fund Raising Committee.
“It was absolutely my privilege,” Falbo said of his service with the NYSSCPA. “Some may think that volunteer service can be a chore, but at the end of the day, it was a privilege and I feel fortunate that so many other CPAs entrusted that responsibility to me. Now, to have them say when it’s done… you left it a little better than when you found it … that is the ultimate compliment.”
