    MELVILLE – (June 14, 2017) – Suffolk CPA, Harold L. Deiters III, a partner at Melville, Long Island, accounting and advisory firm, Baker Tilly, began his one-year term as President of the New York State Society of CPAs (NYSSCPA) June 1.

    Deiters takes the helm of the NYSSCPA as the organization pushes for legislation that would require peer reviews for all New York-based CPA firms, something only medium and large size firms have been required to do by law since 2011.

    NEW YORK — (May 23, 2017) — The New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA) is pleased to announce the winners of its 2017 Excellence in Financial Journalism Awards.

    This award recognizes reporters from the national and local press whose work was published, posted or broadcasted in 2016, contributed to a better and balanced understanding of business or financial topics. Winners were selected by a panel of judges comprised of NYSSCPA members and financial journalists, who ranked submissions on accuracy, quality and thoroughness of research as well as a fair and balanced representation of the topic. This year’s winners will be honored during a luncheon ceremony on June 8 in New York City

    NYSSCPA 2016 Top 10 Tax Filing Tips

    1. New York State driver’s license requirement – When New York taxpayers begin filing their 2016 returns, they’ll also need to provide their accountant with their New York State driver’s license or state-issued IDs. This new information will act as an additional level of identity authentication to prevent fraudulent returns from being filed by criminals. Alabama and Ohio have similar requirements with more states to follow. Only one ID is necessary for married couples filing jointly.

The 34th annual Excellence in Financial Journalism Awards (EFJ) — honoring the best in business news journalism — is calling for submissions. Broadcast, print, radio and online news organizations and reporters can submit financial news stories that were published, posted or aired between Jan. 1, 2016 and Dec. 31, 2016. 

     

  • NY CPAs Support Proposed Cybersecurity Rules for New York’s Financial Institutions — But With Revisions

    NEW YORK (Nov. 17, 2016)—The New York State Society of CPAs (NYSSCPA) supports the New York State Department of Financial Services’ proposed cybersecurity requirements for the state’s financial services companies; however, the Society warned against using current language in the proposal that could potentially undermine their effectiveness or result in unintended consequences. Some of the Society’s suggestions would provide impacted organizations with flexibility to comply with the new DFS regulations.
