    Accountants discuss bridging the generations
    Accounting Today
Every generation has its own view on what works best in firms, as a group of CPAs talked about the changes they are seeing in today's environment. During a panel discussion Tuesday hosted by the Accountants Club of America. Peter Frank, a partner at the New York firm Cornick Garber Sandler, reminisced about how he was one of the first accountants to use a PC in the early 1980s, advising some of his clients about computers, while needing to write some programs on his own because the software hadn’t been developed. He started out as a musician but got drawn into accounting by helping his father out a few days a week during tax season.

    Financial advice for expectant moms
    WROC Rochester First
CPA Michelle Staebell of the New York State Society of CPAs discussed some Mother's Day financial advice Monday on News 8 at Sunrise. With Mother's Day approaching on May 14, Staebell began by offering some advice for moms as it relates to their children.  "First off, I think allowances are great for children," she said. "It teaches them about money -- the value of money -- how to save money. If they get a set amount each week, they can save it up for a large-ticket item. I think that's really important."

    Financial spring cleaning
    WROC Rochester First
CPA Tom Walpole offered some advice for your financial spring cleaning Monday on News 8 at Sunrise. Wapole listed six areas to focus on as part of your financial spring cleaning. The first is review your credit report.  "Everybody is entitled to one free check a year with the Credit Reporting Act," said Walpole. "Go to annualcreditreport.com and check your credit report. One of the three credit agencies will let you know what's going on there. See if anyone has opened any accounts under your name that you don't know about. See if everything is proper. By law, they have to make corrections for that."

As Auditing Evolves, New Litigation Threats Emerge
    Bloomberg BNA
Matthew Bosher is a litigation partner with Hunton & Williams LLP. His practice concentrates on financial reporting and corporate governance with a particular emphasis on accounting issues and the audit process. The audit function is changing rapidly. Audit firms are integrating data analytics, machine learning and other modern technology in audit work, changing the breadth and depth of audits and clients’ expectations. Meanwhile, regulators now envision an audit report dramatically different than the form of report that has existed for decades. This new proposed report would reveal details about many of the auditor’s processes and judgments.

Last minute tips for filing taxes down to the wire
    WROC Rochester First
CPA Dave Young stopped by News 8 to share some last minute tips if you still haven't filed your tax return. Young recommends double-checking your whole return, including 1099 and W-2 forms, to ensure you pick all your income and don't miss any credits. Also make sure to check social security numbers and that you signed the return. Young also stresses the importance of double-checking your bank account information to guarantee your refund goes to the right account. According to Young, a common credit people miss is the Child Tax Credit. Also don't forget that you can deduct daycare costs if you have children in daycare. Charitable contributions can also be deducted.

How to file for a tax extension before you run out of time
    Yahoo Finance
If you’re racing to make the April 18 tax deadline, but can’t get to them on time, relax! Getting an extension to file your taxes is pretty simple. I’ve actually done it twice myself. On this episode of The Payoff, I’ll tell you how to file for an individual extension. Hurdle #1: You have to file for both a federal and state extension. To get the federal extension, go to the IRS’ site and find form 4868 which is the application for an automatic extension. If you send this form in by April 18, it buys you 6 months of time and your new deadline will be Oct. 17, 2017. You generally can’t get more time than that.

We’ll also have another tax pro chiming in from the newsroom with additional answers and monitoring Facebook comments. Our two CPAs are Sheila Brandenberg and Stephanie Hines.

Liberal NYC taxpayers resent paying money to Trump programs
    AmNewYork
A lot of New Yorkers are finding tax time particularly painful this year. Liberal and progressive NYC taxpayers resent filling the coffers of a federal government headed by a billionaire president who refuses to release his own tax returns, brags about avoiding taxes (“That makes me smart!”), and who has promised to use the money collected for programs they find repugnant. Past years’ angry filers were TEA (Taxed Enough Already) party members or sympathizers who resent “big government’s” social programs, helping the poor and sending money abroad.
