IRS to Launch PTIN Application System
The IRS announced Thursday that it expects its online application system for registering for a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) to go live in mid-September.
The application system was created in light of the IRS’ proposed requirement for all individuals who receive compensation for preparing tax returns – CPAs, lawyers and enrolled agents – to have a PTIN. According to the IRS, those who apply for a PTIN this year would pay $64.25, with $50 of the total fee going towards outreach, technology and compliance costs, and $14.25 going to a third-party vendor who will operate the system and provide customer support. Compensated tax return preparers would be required to renew their PTINs annually and pay a user fee, which may change in future years.
Per the proposed requirements, all compensated tax return preparers will need to register for a PTIN even if they're not subject to testing and continuing education requirements or currently possess a PTIN. Those who already have a PTIN generally will be reassigned the same number when they re-register.
The move is part of a series of steps planned to increase oversight of federal tax return preparation.
