The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) has issued its Fiscal Year 2026 Program Plan, itemizing the almost 100 audits, inspections, and evaluations it intends to undertake in the next year.

TIGTA said the plan reflects its annual strategic review of “high-risk or emerging issues impacting federal tax administration and the IRS,” noting that adjustments have also been made based on congressional requests, findings from earlier reports, referrals from its investigative office, and input from IRS and Treasury leadership.

A substantial number of the upcoming reviews will still be centered on the agency’s workforce. TIGTA will complement its July report on reductions in staff with an examination of how the losses are impacting overtime, premium pay, and important functions like examination, collections, and criminal investigations.

A separate project examines how IRS Criminal Investigation’s ability to address tax-related crimes has been impacted by reduced resources.

Operational changes inside the agency feature prominently too. TIGTA will review the IRS’s progress in phasing out paper checks, assess its compliance with return-to-office requirements, and examine controls tied to facility security, mobile device use abroad, and the distribution of forms and publications.

Other reviews will focus on taxpayer services, identity theft protections, information security measures, and IRS implementation of recent tax law changes.

TIGTA said it would continue striving for effective and efficient use of resources, while the agency is undergoing some of the most dramatic structural and workforce changes in its history.
