Hurricane Irene/Tropical Storm Lee Relief Resources

To facilitate the Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee relief effort, the IRS, New York State Department of Taxation and Finance and New York City Department of Finance issued a series of notices with information for taxpayers and tax preparers. Relief may also be available via the FAE and AICPA benevolent funds.
FEMA, on Sept. 13, declared several NY counties that were affected by Tropical Storm Lee as disaster areas. More information is below.

Filing and payment relief applies in the following states, counties and municipalities, so far:

New York: (Note: Several NYC counties added 9/12/11): Albany, Bronx, Clinton, Columbia, Delaware, Dutchess, Essex, Greene, Kings, Montgomery, Nassau, Orange, Otsego, Putnam, Queens, Rensselaer, Richmond, Rockland, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Sullivan, Suffolk, Ulster, Warren, Washington and Westchester counties.

New Jersey: Atlantic, Bergen, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Essex, Gloucester, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Passaic, Salem, Somerset, Sussex, Union and Warren counties.

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE 
  • Designation of 14 New York Counties as Primary Natural Disaster Areas
U.S. SMALL BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION 
  • The U.S. SBA is offering physical disaster loans to businesses or private, nonprofit organizations in declared disaster areas that have incurred damage.
  • The U.S. SBA is also offering home and personal property loans to individuals in declared disaster areas who have suffered damage.
U.S. DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION

Proposed allocation for repairing roads and bridges damaged by a variety of natural disasters. This money will reimburse states for fixing or replacing highways, bridges and other roadway structures. Costs associated with detours, debris removal and other immediate measures necessary to restore traffic flow in impacted areas are also eligible for reimbursement.

FAE/AICPA BENEVOLENT FUNDS AVAILABLE TO MEMBERS

 

In the wake of that disaster, any current NYSSCPA or past member of the Society in need can apply for assistance from the FAE Benevolent Fund.

 

The Benevolent Fund provides financial aid and other voluntary assistance to those who, in the judgment of the FAE Board of Trustees, are deemed in need and deserving of such aid and assistance because of ill health, physical disability or misfortune.

 

Download the Benevolent Fund application if you meet the criteria described above. The AICPA also has a benevolent fund available to its members in need. Visit the AICPA website for more information about its benevolent fund and application.
