CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN THE ACCOUNTING PROFESSION

What Is COAP?

COAP is a five-day summer program that is held at several college campuses across New York State. The program is an important component of the New York State Society of CPAs' efforts to recruit young people into the CPA profession. Founded in 1987, COAP recruits high school juniors from public and private schools in New York. Recruitment for COAP is focused on minority groups historically underrepresented in the CPA profession.

By attending courses on campus and interacting with other students who share similar interests, COAP provides an invaluable preview of college life. COAP also encourages you to think beyond college and learn about the business world. Sessions in accounting, financial analysis and computers are all part of the COAP curriculum. And you’ll learn directly from the experts. All sessions are taught by CPAs and other business professionals who have firsthand experience and knowledge.

But it’s not just about course work—you’ll visit corporations, accounting firms, and government agencies that will provide firsthand exposure to the business world and an opportunity to meet with successful minorities.

“COAP has given me the facts I needed to know about college. I feel very secure
knowing that the mentors I met will continue their guidance and support
throughout my high school and college education.”

- Barakai Abdul-Wahay, COAP Alumnus

COAP also features personal development workshops that will not only help you professionally, but will assist you in your college career. You’ll learn about topics such as goal setting, networking, resume writing, etiquette, and communication skills.

“COAP has given me experience in the field of business, helped me make decisions for the career I want to pursue, and it has given me the chance to do something productive in the summer.”

- Damon Duke, COAP Alumnus

COAP isn’t just another impressive thing to put on your college application—COAP works. It’s a proven way to prepare for college and the business world. A recent alumni survey revealed that almost 100% of respondents went on to college and 70% majored or are enrolled in accounting or business programs.
