President-Elect
Committee Service Letter
2009- 2010 Committee Year
A Letter from NYSSCPA President-elect, David J. Moynihan
Our profession
is built on the principle that quality matters. It matters in
everything we do.
At a time when
the very nature of the role of a certified public
accountant is being challenged by the outside world, instilling
confidence that we are truly trusted professionals has never
been more important. One way we build that trust and insure quality is through the
work of our statewide committees. The Society has more than 60
statewide committees addressing current specialty practice areas,
development of the profession and Society operations.
I am urging you, my fellow members, to get involved during my
upcoming term as Society president. You will never find a greater
opportunity to grow more as a professional than by serving on a
committee. The exchange of ideas and what you learn from others
is unparalleled. I know because I have done it.
This is your
opportunity to be a leader, enhance your prestige and make a
difference. Committee service will provide you with
a forum outside the office to sharpen your professional skills
and hone your soft skills. After
joining a committee, many members who were reluctant public speakers
are now event leaders. Among
these and other benefits, statewide committee service also
provides excellent networking opportunities.
If you are
a member who lives or works outside New York City, do not let
distance prevent you from becoming a committee member.
The number of meetings is not onerous, the travel reimbursement
policy is very fair (you can find it online at www.nysscpa.org/policy.htm)
and your Society continues to improve its live meeting technology,
allowing for committee participation by phone or via the web.
I
need your help in restoring confidence in our profession. Your
expertise and passion are valuable tools in helping to make that
happen. Whether you practice in public, industry, government
or academia; I assure you, by participating on a committee, you
will
receive far more than you will give. NYSSCPA President-elect David J. Moynihan, CPA

you can teleconference in, as well as utilize the newest addition
to the society’s
committee meetings, the 360 degree webcam. Aside from conferencing
in, committee members can log onto the Internet and literally see
the live committee meeting from several different perspectives.

Eligibility
to Serve on a Committee
All NYSSCPA members, both CPA and associate members throughout
the state, are encouraged to apply for committee service. Some
senior committees have a prerequisite of prior committee service
(noted with *) or prior committee chair service (noted with ^)
as reflected on the abridged committee listing below. Members can
serve on more than one committee. You will be formally notified
of acceptance of your application to serve on a committee upon
approval of the chair of the committee.
The committee year runs
from June 1 to May 31 of the following year. Committee appointments
are also subject to final approval of the Society president.
Members may also join during the course of the year.
Members
Currently Serving on Committees
Current-year committee members are automatically
carried over to the next committee year (except for oversight
committees) unless
they notify the Society that they no longer wish to continue, the
chair deems that their service is no longer required; or if they
receive a “Do Not Reappoint” assessment from the chair.
Appointments are also subject to final approval of the Society
president.
Committee members can check their committee service
history through their online member profile by clicking on “Change Your Info” on
http://www.nysscpa.org and clicking on “Committee Service.”
